Coussins hookés venus du monde entier !
Ce projet est né d’une photo, cette photo est devenue une idée, l’idée, un rêve et ce rêve, une excitante aventure créatrice ; excitante grâce à la générosité et l’implication du monde des hookeuses/hookeux de tapis. Ce monde à la fois mystérieux, inconnu, underground, vibre d’énergie créatrice et d’esprit communautaire. Près de 250 artistes se sont embarqués dans l’aventure, une <<corvée moderne>> à l’ère des réseaux sociaux.
La population en général ignore que l’Église historique de Barachois, ce vieil édifice en bois blanc, sur le bord de la route 133 au Nouveau-Brunswick, aura 200 ans en 2026. Cette petite église est parmi les plus vieux édifices acadiens encore debout sur son site original. Au printemps 2017 le Comité de sauvegarde de l’Église historique de Barachois avait deux défis. Le premier était de savoir comment informer la population de cet anniversaire rare et important. De plus, puisque le Congrès mondial acadien de 2019 approchait, le comité voulait également présenter un événement rassembleur artistique et patrimonial. C’est en examinant une photo des bancs prise du jubé de l’église que l’idée des coussins hookés est venue : remplacer les coussins laissés sur les bancs par des spectateurs depuis la création de la salle Viola Léger en 1980 par un <<coussin hooké>>. On se disait alors qu’une collection de 50 coussins hookés serait probablement réalisable et éveillerait certainement l’intérêt de la population. En juillet 2023, nous avons déposé sur les bancs de l’église historique le 315e coussin… une aventure internationale.
Cette collection, comme d’autres à travers le monde, célèbre fièrement le travail bénévole des artistes en hookage. Elle est à la hauteur de leur esprit communautaire et d’entraide, leur créativité, leur énergie à travailler dans un but commun à relever un défi. Ces artistes sont en grande majorité des femmes. Toutefois, ce qui est encore plus fascinant, c’est que pour un grand nombre, notre rêve est devenu aussi le leur. Toutes et tous avaient une raison de s’embarquer. C'est ce qui a créé la magie. De nombreux artistes rendent hommage à leurs ancêtres, à un membre de leur famille, à des amis acadiens, à une collègue hookeuse, à l’histoire, à l’art du hookage ou tout simplement à la cause.
En août 2019, lors du CMA, nous avons fêté en grande pompe le vernissage de la collection. Plus de 100 hookeux et hookeuses ayant participés au projet étaient présents-tes ; une rencontre familiale. Plus de 1000 personnes sont venues cette journée-là célébrer avec nous. Depuis, grâce à l’intérêt de hookeuses américaines impliquées dans le projet initial des 200 coussins hookés pour mon 200e, nous avons commencé un deuxième projet : USA50, afin que chaque état américain soit représenté dans la collection. Au printemps 2023, nous avons reçu le 50e coussin américain. En septembre 2022, un troisième projet est lancé au Japon par une enseignante du tapis hooké. Elle encourage ses étudiants à créer un coussin à thème japonais pour la collection internationale de coussins hookés. Treize de ses étudiants ainsi qu’elle-même s’embarquent dans l’aventure.
La réalisation de ces deux derniers projets internationaux ainsi que l’ajout depuis le vernissage de 2019, de coussins venus de l’Australie, du Guatemala, du Brésil, de la France et du Pérou, cèlent définitivement le statut international de notre collection. L’objectif de départ est près de six fois atteint !! Quel exploit !!
La vieille petite église en bois blanc vous est reconnaissante. L’écho de tous ses ancêtres et constructeurs vous dit MERCI. L’Église historique de Barachois va fêter son 200e anniversaire de construction en 2026. Soyons fiers ! Célébrons notre histoire ensemble !
Cette nouvelle version du catalogue souligne le rebranding de la collection sous le nom de « la collection internationale de coussins hookés de Barachois » et inclus tous les nouveaux coussins ajoutés depuis août 2019.

The Barachois International Collection of Hooked Cushions
Hooked cushions from all around the world!
This project was born from a photo… the photo became an idea, the idea became a dream and the dream became an exciting creative adventure, thanks to the generosity and involvement of the world rug hooking community. This mysterious and unknown underground community is vibrant with creative energy and spirit. Close to 250 artists embarked on the adventure… a "modern chore" in an era of social networks.
The general public is likely unaware that the Barachois Historical Church, an old, whitewashed church on New Brunswick Route 133, will be 200 years old in 2026. This small church is among the oldest Acadian buildings still standing on its original site. In the spring of 2017, the Committee for the historic church had two challenges: the first was how to inform the public of this rare and important anniversary; and secondly that the 2019 World Acadian Congress was approaching, therefore the committee wanted to present a unifying event that was both artistic and heritage. It was while examining a photo taken from the second-floor church of the benches below, that the idea of the hooked cushions came. The idea was to cover the cushions, left on the benches by spectators attending events since the creation of the Viola Léger Hall in 1980, with a hooked work of art. At the time, the committee thought that a collection of fifty (50) hooked cushions would probably be feasible and would certainly arouse the interest of the public. In July 2023, the 315th cushion was added to the collection: an international adventure.
The collection, like others across America, proudly celebrates the volunteer work of artists in hooking. The project lives up to the volunteers’ community spirit and helping others, their creativity, and their energy to work towards a common goal to meet the challenge. These artists are mostly women. What is even more fascinating is that for many, the church committee’s dream has become theirs too. Everyone had a reason to embark. That's what created magic. Many artists paid tribute to their ancestors, a family member, Acadian friends, a colleague hooker, history, the art of hooking or just for the cause.
In August 2019, during the CMA, we celebrated the opening of the collection with great fanfare. More than 100 hookers who participated in the project were present: a family meeting. More than 1000 people came that day to celebrate with us. Since then, thanks to the interest of American hookers involved in the initial project of 200 hooked cushions for my 200th, we have started a second project: USA50, so that each American state is represented in the collection. In the spring of 2023, we received the 50th American cushion. In September 2022, a third project was launched in Japan by a rug hooking teacher. She encouraged her students to create a Japanese-themed cushion for the Barachois International Collection. Thirteen of her students as well as herself embark on the adventure.
The realization of these last two international projects as well as the addition since the 2019 opening of cushions from Australia, Guatemala, Brazil, France, and Peru, definitively conceals the international status from our collection. (Scotland, England, United Arab Emirates)

The old little white wooden church is grateful to you. The echo of all its ancestors and builders says THANK YOU. The historic Church of Barachois will celebrate its 200th anniversary of construction in 2026. Let's be proud! Let's celebrate our history together!
This new version of the catalog highlights the rebranding of the collection as "the international collection of hooked cushions from Barachois" and includes all new cushions added since August 2019.
